GenAI technologies are being promoted as the door to a new era of economic dynamism. However, the opposite is more likely. While LLM-based tools haven’t measured up to corporate promises of productivity growth, they are being used to justify mass layoffs and increase worker exploitation. Further, the gargantuan investment in AI infrastructure is prompting nationwide opposition as it poses the threat of environmental degradation and economic crisis. Control over the deployment of AI is becoming a key issue for society at large, and tech workers could have a defining say in it.
